Quick answer

Kazakhstan’s national flag has a blue field with a golden sun and 32 rays above a soaring eagle. A golden national ornament runs vertically beside the hoist. Its height is half its length.

Specification

Article 1 of the 2007 Constitutional Law on State Symbols describes the blue rectangle, golden devices, and 1:2 ratio. Article 3 approves the image in Annex 1; Article 4(3) requires conformity with the national standard at every size. The government-hosted English text labels itself an unofficial translation.

Official interpretation

The presidential description connects blue with peace and prosperity, and the single-color field with national unity. The sun evokes life, energy, and abundance; its grain-shaped rays suggest welfare. The eagle represents sovereignty and aspiration, while the hoist ornament expresses Kazakhstan’s artistic and cultural traditions.

Physical color references

The inspected 2007 standard, §3.2.4, gives Pantone 3125 U for the cloth’s blue and 102 U for its gold. Section 3.2.18.2 instead gives interim references for non-textile objects: 3125 C/U and 810 C/U, pending a national color catalogue. These are different application contexts. Later amendments and that catalogue were not verified; obtain the current standard and physical references for manufacture.

Construction notes

The SVG uses a 1000 × 500 field. Its sun center is (540.236, 210), with disc radius 67.275; nested rotations produce 32 rays at 11.25° intervals. The eagle sits below the sun, and the hoist ornament uses reflected path groups. These measurements describe the artwork, not legal tolerances.

Annex A, printed page 10 of the 2007 standard, uses a 2000 × 1000 model. At half scale its sun center is (540, 210), outer ray radius 105, and disc diameter 138. The SVG’s disc diameter is 134.55, about 2.5% smaller. Overall placement and statutory field geometry agree, but detailed curves are not certified. Preserve the artwork’s proportions; use the approved drawing for production. Specimen provenance →

Historical record

The government’s 2022 country profile dates adoption of the national symbols to 4 June 1992. The presidential site credits the flag design to Shaken Niyazbekov. The national history portal separately records a ceremony and hoisting at the presidential residence and Supreme Council on 6 June 1992; this ceremonial date should not replace the adoption date.

The 2007 Constitutional Law supplies the later statutory framework. The Ministry of Trade and Integration reports technical refinements in 2011 concerning colors, symbolic elements, materials, and dimensions. This record covers the continuing national design, without claiming that today’s vector reproduces every 1992 production detail. KZ-NAT-1992 is an editorial catalogue identifier, not an official record code.

Use and display

Article 4 provides for government and diplomatic display, designated ceremonies, educational occasions, and stern-flag use on registered vessels. It also allows display on other buildings at their owners’ discretion and requires illumination for flags permanently displayed on buildings at night. Consult the full law and implementing rules for a particular display context.
