Article 9 identifies the national flag as a symbol of the Republic, and the Constitution’s Second Schedule sets out its design. The three principal bands have equal width; the white separators are narrow and the central emblem is superimposed across the field.

On a 160-unit hoist, the principal bands are 48 units each and the white separators are 8 units each, producing the proportional sequence 6:1:6:1:6. The shield and spears must remain centered and symmetrical; they are a single structured device rather than independent ornaments.
Historical record
The flag was adopted at independence on 12 December 1963. Its status and construction were carried into Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, where Article 9 and the Second Schedule identify and reproduce the national symbols.
