The flag law identifies the tricolor as an official state symbol and requires its images to correspond to the standard Pantone reference and statutory proportions. The national flag is distinct from Lithuania’s historical state flag bearing the mounted knight.

Historical record
A commission of Jonas Basanavičius, Tadas Daugirdas, and Antanas Žmuidzinavičius approved the yellow-green-red design on 19 April 1918, and the Council of Lithuania accepted it as an interim national flag. The tricolor returned during the restoration of independence; legislation adopted in 2004 established the present 3:5 format.
