Nagoya’s white municipal flag centers a dark-red maruhachi: a ring enclosing the stylized character 八, the Japanese and Chinese numeral eight.
Design structure
The flag is built around one centered civic emblem. A dark-red annulus contains the matching stylized 八 mark, leaving white negative space between the ring and character.

Center the maruhachi emblem on a 2:3 white field. The ring and internal character use one color. Preserve the open white interval between them and the asymmetrical calligraphic form of 八; a plain typographic numeral is not a substitute.
Historical record
Nagoya’s city assembly approved the maruhachi in October 1907. The city explains that the mark is believed to derive from a tally sign used by the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family. The modern flag applies that established civic emblem to a plain field.
