Osaka’s 2:3 city flag centers a yellow Miotsukushi emblem on a deep purple-blue field. The device recalls the channel markers that guided ships through the shallow waters of old Naniwa Bay.
Design structure
A single linear emblem occupies the center of the field. Its crossed upper strokes, horizontal cap, and central stem form Osaka’s stylized Miotsukushi waterway marker.

Use a 2:3 field and center the Miotsukushi within a notional circle measuring three-fifths of the hoist. Osaka’s current procurement schedule identifies the field as a dark purplish blue and the emblem as vivid yellow; it also calls for a narrow white outline on sewn production flags.
Historical record
Osaka selected the Miotsukushi as its city emblem in April 1894. The city connects the mark to channel signs once placed in Naniwa Bay and to the water transport and maritime trade that underpinned Osaka’s growth. The flag carries that established emblem as its sole charge.
