Mauritius’s national flag has four equal horizontal bands, red, blue, yellow and green from top to bottom, without an emblem. Its hoist is two-thirds of its fly.
Specification
Section 5 and the Second Schedule of the 2022 national-symbols Act govern the flag. The government overview describes the same geometry as 6:4 (fly:hoist).
Textile references and specimen colors
| Band, top to bottom | Statutory Pantone fashion home cotton | Local SVG screen value |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 18-1664TCX | #EA2839 |
| Blue | 19-3939TCX | #1A206D |
| Yellow | 14-0957TCX | #FFD500 |
| Green | 17-6030TCX | #00A551 |
The government overview still lists older codes 0.005, 7.086, 0.001 and 0.010 as British Standard colors. This entry follows the later statute’s TCX references. No equivalence or precise digital conversion is inferred. The retrieved vector predates the latest Commons palette; its fills are screen approximations, not official RGB or textile matches.
Construction notes
For an ideal drawing with hoist H, use fly 1.5H and band height H/4. The inspected SVG has viewBox 0 0 6 4. Four overlaid rectangles of heights 4, 3, 2 and 1 leave four visible one-unit bands; all span the six-unit fly. Geometry is preserved from the source asset.
Specified manufactured sizes
| Type | Fly × hoist (mm) | Band height (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Mast | 1800 × 1200 | 300 |
| Desk or handheld | 150 × 100 | 25 |
| Car | 300 × 200 | 50 |
The Second Schedule allows ±2% on colored-section dimensions and 1 mm color overlap. It also specifies mast-flag material and performance tests. Consult that schedule for manufacture; this ideal SVG is not a production certificate.
Color meanings
The government’s explanation associates red with the struggle for freedom and independence, blue with the surrounding Indian Ocean, yellow with the light of independence, and green with agriculture and year-round greenery.
Historical record
National Assembly proceedings, page 119, recall the four-color flag being raised at noon on 12 March 1968 at Champs de Mars. This record dates national use from that independence ceremony; it does not infer an earlier design-approval date or designer attribution. Mauritius became a republic on 12 March 1992, with the four-band flag continuing in use.
The Assembly’s legislative register dates passage of Act 5 of 2022 to 26 April, assent and gazetting to 28 April, and commencement to 1 June. It replaced the 2015 Act and revoked the 2016 technical regulations. The 2024 amendment concerns the arms and seal; it does not change the flag schedule.
Use and display
Section 5 provides for general domestic and appropriate international use. Sections 12–15 address alteration, exhibition and commercial use; consult the complete Act for their conditions and exceptions.
